Movable Bridge Power

Replace existing 480volt service to movable bridge – included new service switchgear, ¼ mile of bridge supported service feeder, and submersible section under the causeway and complete rework of the existing Bridge Tender Building and switchgear.

Power in Tunnel

Replace 7.8 mile long high voltage distribution system inside a tunnel. Project included replacement of all high voltage cable, transformers, secondary equipment and grounding within and outside the tunnel entrances.
Yard Lighting

  1. Construction drawings and CA/CO for field forces to install 2 ½ mile long 25KV overhead power distribution system and yard floodlight towers.
  2. Construction documents and project management for the 480V distribution upgrade and high mast tower lighting project at multiple auto facilities and many intermodal yards.

Diesel Repair Shop Lighting

Provide construction drawings and construction observation engineering services for lighting for the Diesel Repair Shop.

Standby Generators

  1. Provide construction drawings and construction observation engineering services for new standby generators for yard office and hump tower.
  2. Construction documents for addition a standby diesel generator facility for the rail yard. Two 1000 kW generators were installed with 15 kV metal-clad switchgear for primary circuit switching.

Rail Car Wash

Preliminary Basis of Design and Opinion of Probable Cost for a rail car interior wash system to handle rail cars in material handling service. Systems included a car wash system, car dry system and systems to remove excess material from the cars prior to washing.

Provide architectural building programming information for paint facility. Coordinate paint equipment requirements with general contractor for placement in the building. New Locomotive Wash Facility

Provide architectural building programming information for the pre-engineered metal building. Coordinate wash equipment requirements with general contractor for placement in the building. Renovation of Steam Locomotive Repair Facility

Provide architectural building programming information and schematic designs for building renovations, including: office spaces, crew areas, locker rooms, storage rooms, room finishes, new acoustical tile ceilings, windows, roof and steam locomotive maintenance areas. Also the renovation of existing 7 bay roundhouse that includes new pairs of roundhouse doors at each of the 7 bays, new windows and repair of roof and existing walls as required. Exterior construction of both buildings designed to match original construction to qualify for National Historic Landmark certification. Conduct pre-bid and pre-construction meetings. Manage contract administration and construction observation through closeout.

Crew Locker Room & ADA Upgrades

Provide construction documents for renovation work that included demolition of toilets, sinks, partitions and showers and rebuilt to comply with ADA standards. Work also included new floor finishes, HVAC upgrades, lighting and new lockers. Manage and review building construction drawings and specifications for the building. Conduct pre-bid and pre-construction meetings. Management of contract administration and construction observation through project closeout.

New Yard Office

Provide architectural building programming information including office spaces, locker rooms, storage areas, crew facilities, room finishes and ceilings. Crew Change Building

Provide architectural building programming information for double wide modular building including office spaces, men & women restrooms, storage areas, room finishes and ceilings. Also provide footing/foundation plan, jack stands, septic tank details, site plan layout and parking area. Manage and review design consultants design/build construction drawings and specifications for the building. Conduct pre-bid and pre-construction meetings.

Fueling Facilities

  1. Construction documents for the electrical portion of the upgrade of existing fueling facilities including a new pumphouse, new diesel fuel storage tank, and modifications to the existing diesel fuel tank car unloading facility. Provisions for standby diesel generator were included.
  2. Construction documents for the electrical portion of a rail yard fueling facility including extension of the 13.8 kV primary distribution system and renovation of the existing diesel fuel storage tank. New diesel fuel and lube oil storage tanks, pump house, locomotive sanding, mainline fueling platform, yard/building lighting, office and support buildings, and oil water separator facilities.
  3. Construction documents for the electrical portion of a large rail yard fueling facility including renovation of the 13.8 kV primary distribution system, renovation of the existing diesel fuel tank car load/unload facility, and existing diesel fuel storage tanks and existing pump house. New diesel fuel and lube oil storage tanks, pump house, diesel fuel tender car loading, locomotive sanding, mainline fueling platform, inspection fueling platform with inspection pits, yard and building lighting, office building, support buildings, and interconnection with oil water separator facilities. Standby diesel generators were provided.
  4. Construction documents for the electrical portion of the renovation for the Diesel Freight Pit fueling and inspection facility. This facility was renovated without being taken out of service. In addition to new fueling arms, lube oil and locomotive coolant boom cabinets, a Dynamic Air sanding system was installed for locomotive traction sand.
  5. Construction documents for the electrical portion of a mainline fueling facility. The facility included two fueling platforms with canopies, a pumphouse for diesel fuel, lube oil and locomotive coolant pumping systems, diesel and lube oil above ground storage tanks, tank car and tank truck diesel unloading racks for diesel fuel and lube oil supply, and office and locker room building. This project was never constructed.

Electrical Projects

Construction documents to upgrade the existing 4160Y/2400 V primary distribution system to 12.46Y/7.2 kV. Project tasks included system walkdown, load flow and short circuit studies, and consultation with Owner to include other ongoing construction projects plus future projects to properly design system for anticipated loads.
Construction documents for removal of existing 550 kVA redundant, three‑module UPS system and installation of a 4000 A switchboard with ATS, a 625 kVA isolated redundant UPS system and connections to existing standby diesel generators for the railroad headquarters Data Center.
Preliminary drawings and specifications for the electrical portion of a railroad intermodal facility. Electrical distribution was 4160 V and 480/277 V. Lighting design conformed to California light pollution standards. Lead electrical engineer also served as project manager for entire design.
Distribution study of the 13.8 kV electrical system for an eight-mile long rail yard including system walkdown, load flow study, short circuit study, evaluation and recommendations including locations for additional yard services and power monitoring equipment.
The 4160 V primary distribution system was documented for entire yard. A portion of the overhead system was removed and replaced with insulated cable in cable tray. Metal-clad 5 kV switchgear was added to provide service entrance disconnects for Car Repair Shop.
Construction documents and project management for major electrical renovation of the North Platte Diesel Shop. Project involved replacing 13.8kV primary distribution equipment, multiple switchboards and approximately fifty panel boards throughout the shop. Project was designed with multiple primary feeders into the distribution center, redundant 1600A feeders into the building, double ended 1600A switch board with tie breaker, and aluminum MC cable feeders in aluminum cable tray feeding 480V panel boards. Project had to be designed and constructed with minimal power outages in this 24/7/365 day facility.
Construction documents and project management for replacing 480V “welding receptacles” and 120V duplex receptacles at the Diesel Shop. Project also included replacing of various transformers and panelboards throughout the shop.
Construction documents and project management for providing a generator connection cabinet. Project included consolidating multiple services into the building, specifying new switchboards, upgrading the 480V distribution, bringing the fire pump system up to code, and installing a generator connection cabinet to the specified loads throughout the building.

High Mast Lighting

Construction documents for the 480V distribution upgrade and high mast tower lighting project at auto facility. Project was not built.

Electric Switch Heaters

Construction documents for 450kW three-phase stand-by generator for remote electric switch heater site where only single phase commercial power was available. Site was setup using multiple services from utility and multiple automatic transfer switches to allow generator to be balanced when providing stand-by power.

Electrical Studies

Performed investigative study of Yard to determine cause of power outage and corrections needed to be performed to minimize future outages.
Performed protective device coordination study and power factor correction study for eight miles of lightly loaded single-phase 7.2kV underground primary.
Performed investigative study of Yard lighting contactors to determine cause of contactors failing and corrections needed to be performed to minimize future problems.
Performed protective device coordination study and power factor correction study for 30 miles of lightly loaded single-phase 7.2kV underground primary. Only 15 miles was built.
Performed protective device coordination study and power factor correction study for eight miles of lightly loaded single-phase 7.2kV underground primary.
Performed owner review of all arc flash studies and various railroad electrical distribution systems projects completed by consultants.
