KPE accepts the ACEC Honor Award in the Small Firms Category for Union Pacific Global 4 AG Transload Facility Project.
About the Project:
KPE was awarded a contract for engineering services by Union Pacific Railroad with the goal of designing a State-of-the-Art, highly automated grain processing and transporting facility. The facility would intake grain, test, clean, and store it until it was ready to be shipped to other plants or even overseas to be utilized. This facility would include multiple buildings, several large storage bins, and various other user kiosks all spread across an 8-acre campus. KPE designed an extensive cable tray routing plan to provide power and control wiring to all designed locations across the facility. KPE worked closely with multiple manufacturers, controls contractors, and the client to design an extensive automated system for the facility.
This automation allowed for facility centralization, and low numbers of operators being able to manage the large facility. This automation system also worked to reduce loading and unloading times. Due to the constant presence of grain dust, elevated working conditions, high vehicle traffic, and high automation, the facility would have constant hazardous conditions for users and equipment. All designs were made with operator safety and facility safety in mind. These safety precautions included additional emergency lighting systems, lockable disconnecting means in central locations, and heavy-duty equipment enclosures. KPE persevered through supply chain complications and changing equipment requirements to successfully complete the $22 Million dollar facility.
