The holiday season is full of family, fun and bright decorations. Unfortunately, it is also full of fire investigations for KPE’s forensic engineering department. Here are some tips to keep your tree safe this holiday:
1) Keep fresh trees hydrated. A dry tree is a hazard and a few days without water can dry out a Christmas tree!
2) Clean dust off artificial trees. Dust buildup can be dangerously flammable.
3) Keep trees at least 3 feet away from any heat sources. Fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents can pose dangers.
4) Inspect lights for damage and throw away lights with worn/broken/kinked cords or loose bulb connections.
5) Turn off all lights and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.
6) Do not overload circuits. If your circuit breaker trips, unplug what is overloading the circuit before your reset it or risk damaging the breaker.
7) Use an extension cord outlet cover that has a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) that will automatically shut off power if water gets in contact with wires.
8) Never run extension cords under rugs or where they could be a tripping hazard.
9) After the holidays dispose of trees quickly and do not store a dried-out tree in a garage or against a house.
